Strategic Meeting Held at Peradeniya to Expand Organic Agriculture Research Impact

Peradeniya, Sri Lanka – January 24, 2025
A high-level strategic meeting was convened on January 24, 2025, at the University of Peradeniya to chart the future course for scaling up the outcomes of ongoing organic agriculture research initiatives in Sri Lanka. The session brought together key representatives from the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD), United Kingdom, and the Movement for Land and Agricultural Reform (MONLAR), Sri Lanka, alongside researchers and faculty members from the university.

The meeting focused on evaluating the research progress made in recent years—particularly on the development and application of enriched compost and eco-agri technologies—and identifying opportunities to expand these sustainable practices at the national level.

Discussions centered around:

  • Translating research into farmer-centric models
  • Strengthening institutional collaboration for long-term support
  • Developing policy recommendations for scaling organic farming
  • Integrating organic practices into rural development strategies

CAFOD reaffirmed its continued commitment to funding and international advocacy for sustainable agriculture, while MONLAR emphasized the need for strong local networks to drive adoption and awareness at the community level.

The University of Peradeniya, as a leading academic and research institution in agriculture, pledged its support to broaden the scientific foundation and technical capacity necessary for expanding organic agriculture across diverse agro-ecological zones.

This planning session marks a pivotal step in institutionalizing eco-agriculture research into mainstream policy and practice, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s shift toward more resilient, regenerative farming systems.
