Ecological Agriculture Training Center Under Development in Kurunegala

Kurunegala, Sri Lanka – Ongoing
A new Demonstration and Training Center on Ecological Agriculture is currently under development in Kurunegala, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s efforts to promote sustainable farming education and practical skills development.

The center is designed to offer National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) certified courses in both English and Sinhala, creating accessible pathways for youth, farmers, and professionals seeking to build expertise in ecological agriculture. Once completed, it will serve as a national hub for hands-on training, demonstration farming, and agroecological knowledge transfer.

The initiative aligns with the broader vision of transforming Sri Lanka’s agricultural landscape by equipping stakeholders with the tools and understanding to adopt regenerative, environmentally responsible farming practices. The curriculum will cover key areas such as:

  • Organic composting and soil health management
  • Integrated pest management (IPM)
  • Crop diversification and climate-resilient practices
  • Sustainable water and resource use
  • Agri-entrepreneurship and cooperative development

The center will also serve as a field laboratory for testing and showcasing low-cost, scalable eco-agri innovations and will host workshops, farmer field schools, and policy dialogues.

By bridging vocational education with real-world agroecological applications, this initiative aims to empower the next generation of sustainable farmers and agri-professionals, positioning Kurunegala as a model district for ecological transformation in Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector.
