Galaha, Sri Lanka – Since 2021
A pioneering Eco-Agriculture Demonstration Unit cum Pelleted Organic Fertilizer Production Facility has been under development at Gemi Seva Sevana, Galaha, since 2021, marking a bold step toward community-centered sustainable agriculture and localized input production.
Spearheaded by a coalition of agroecology practitioners, researchers, and grassroots organizations, the initiative aims to integrate demonstration-based learning with circular bioresource utilization, focusing on organic fertilizer innovation and farmer empowerment.
The facility operates as a dual-purpose unit:
- A hands-on demonstration farm showcasing ecological farming methods—including composting, crop rotation, biodiversity integration, and low-input farming techniques.
- A production unit manufacturing pelleted organic fertilizers derived from enriched compost and bio-based inputs, offering a viable alternative to chemical fertilizers while addressing soil health degradation.
The project has become a model for community-driven regenerative agriculture, particularly in the central highlands, where soil erosion, input dependency, and environmental degradation pose persistent challenges.
By combining education, production, and field experimentation, the Galaha unit supports farmers in adopting resilient, eco-friendly practices while fostering local entrepreneurship in organic input manufacturing.
This initiative continues to inspire replication efforts in other regions and underscores the growing momentum toward home-grown, ecologically sound agricultural transformation in Sri Lanka.
